Paxil: An Assessment
Generally known as paroxetine hydrochloride, Paxil is an antidepressant belonging to the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor drug class. The Food and Drug Administration approved Paxil to treat depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, anxiety disorder and post traumatic stress disorder on adults. It is not prescribed for children below 18 years old since studies weren’t able to confirm its efficacy. Positive effects of the drug are often paired with negative ones, but the outcome is greatly affected with the patient’s cooperation.
Every drug brings negative effects, but a great number of individual report no or minor side effects. Paxil has a wide array of side effects; some are minor that can be neglected while others are major effects that need prompt medical intervention. Common minor side effects include, but not limited to nausea, blurring of vision, dry mouth, mood changes, numbness or tingling of the skin, change in appetite and diarrhea. Many of these symptoms disappear on their own over time while some may worsen and needs to be consulted with a health care provider. Major side effects of the drug that can lead to serious medical problems necessitate immediate intervention. Symptoms of major side effects include severe allergic reactions, bizarre behavior, chest pain, confusion, decreased concentration and coordination, abnormal heart rhythm and worsening agitation. Be it minor or major effect, it is wise to consult a health care provider if the symptoms are intolerable.
Before taking any drug, like Paxil, the patient must inform his doctor about any medical conditions, known allergies, drugs he is currently taking and other significant facts about his health. Factors such as these may have significant impact on the effectiveness of the drug. In no way shall Paxil and Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor be taken simultaneously. There have been reports of serious and sometimes fatal reactions after these drugs were taken together. There should be at least 14 days of 2 weeks gap before intake of either drug. Paxil is also linked with congenital malformations on babies exposed to the drug during pregnancy. Also, this drug must not be given to patients who have known allergies to paroxetine because severe allergic reactions may happen.
The side effects, minor and major, have both been reported. Not all patients taking the drug experienced any side effect. However, it is best to see a health care provider first before starting on Paxil therapy.
